talking heads, Southampton

22nd October 2008 - My Ruin w/Sanctorum + Illuminatus + Speed Theory

Another great gig lined up by Southampton Music's Kai Harris – bringing Tairrie B and her crew to Southampton once more. The Talking Heads tonight, however, is rather quiet – perhaps the credit crunch is affecting rock music fans' pockets...

On this tour, My Ruin run their three support acts in a cycle, with a different band opening each night – a brilliant idea, as each band gives it their all no matter what position on the bill they are in. First up are Sanctorum – a very cool four-piece from Essex, UK. They have a really strong Sepultura vibe, with loadsa hair, loadsa good riffs and some awesome break-beat drumming.
When lead singer, Aaron Sly, isn't growling his way through the lyrics, he sounds rather like Mike Patten (Faith No More). Title track of their new album, 'Ashes of Redemption', goes down brilliantly, with bassist Kris Sawkins doing some truly awesome Guitar Hero posturing and facial expressions while thumping on his six-string bass. Final song, Take it All  has a wicked Kiss-style intro, and whilst it is a little cheesy, who doesn't love a nice chunk of vintage cheddar?
While musically Sanctorum are very distinct from the other bands performing tonight, they strike me as a band with great potential, so hopefully their album (released by Copro Records) will get the attention and acclaim it deserves. Watch this space.
